The Challenge
Our client, a provider of 3rd Party Logistic Services (3PL Services) to other organisations, sought advice on how to update their current web-based logistics management system to meet the requirements of government tender. As their current logistics management system was developed more than 20 years ago, and had not been materially updated since, it lacked features expected of modern logistics management systems. Additionally, the Government tender required extensive reporting capability of current stock levels and ordering history, not supported by the client’s current system. Thus, Discerning Digital were tasked with providing IT consulting services and bespoke web development capability, that would give the client a competitive edge during the tender process and increase the client’s long-term productivity.
The Strategy
The Bespoke Web Development and IT Consulting Team at Discerning Digital delivered by undertaking the following:
- Understand business and goals: We read and understood the government tender documentation and held in-depth conversations with the business owners to understand their goals and objectives, and what they liked and disliked about their current system.
- Analysis of Current State: We analysed the client’s current system and identified gaps against the tender requirements and the organisations stated goals

Explore Solutions: We presented options to the client, highlighting the benefits and disadvantages of each option and a rough cost estimate. Options included:
- Modifying the existing system to support wider reporting functionality or
- Building a completely new system
- a) meet the tender requirements and
b) modernise their systems leading to increased efficiency and profitability across the business - Scoping Document & Quote: We wrote a formal scoping document detailing the specifications of the new system build in easy-to-understand language, so the clients could understand exactly what they are investing in.

System Build: Our expert team of software developers built customised business software tailored to the client’s unique processes, with the following features:
- Multiple Tiers of B2B Client User Management
- Platform for clients to place and pay for online Ordering
- Stock and Inventory management system with Barcode Scanning functionality
- Fulfilment system with auto generated shipping labels
- Extensive reporting and data analytics capability
- Migration of the contact details, products, historical stock changes and orders of 2000+ existing clients to new system
- Support & Training: We provided extensive onsite training and support in the use of the new system to ensure users understood how to maximise the use of the new system.
- Feedback: We actively checked in with the client and sought feedback about the system so we could make tweaks and updates where required.
